Yordenis Ugas 2016 Comeback of the Year – For his 2-0 record against undefeated contenders in 2016, Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas has been named the 2016 Comeback Fighter of the Year.
Cuban amateur stand-out Yordenis Ugas turned professional back in July of 2010, and as 2014 came around, he was 15-1 and considered a rising prospect in the crowded welterweight division.
Ugas would stumble in 2014 and then he would fall, going 0-2. In February he took a split decision loss to Emmanuel Robles, and he tried to bounce back quickly and took a loss to Amir Imam in May.
Ugas would let more than two years pass before he returned to the ring this past August to face undefeated prospect Jamal James on a Premier Boxing Champions event held in Verona, New York. James, 20-0 at the time, was slated for bigger things if he could get by Ugas, but Ugas won a comfortable unanimous decision, out-boxing James.
Ugas got the call again for September 27th, where he once again was facing undefeated talent in Bryant Perrella (14-0). Ugas knocked Perrella down in the opening round to set the tone for the fight. He would take Perrella out in the fourth round for his second upset win of his comeback.
Whereas in 2014 he faced a pair of undefeated fighters and faced defeat, he returned in 2016 to face two similarly rated, undefeated fighters and he won both times.
Also receiving consideration for Comeback of the Year were Abner Mares, who returned after a 14 month layoff to capture the WBA world title at featherweight this past year and China’s 35 year old Zou Shiming, who returned from a loss in his first bid to win a world title in March of last year to go 3-0 in 2016, capping it off by becoming China’s first world champion with a WBO world flyweight title win this past November.
Ugas may have been saddled by the high expectations that accompany many of Cuba’s amateurs in the early going. Though well decorated, Ugas was not from the elite amateur school of Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa and other high level Cuban stars and when he took a pair of back to back losses in 2014, he found himself with little backing to continue his career. The matchmakers were not thinking of featuring Ugas in any of the matches he fought in 2016.
For putting in the work and returning to fights where he was brought in as an underdog against undefeated prospects and going 2-0, Yordenis Ugas is your 2016 Comeback Fighter of the Year.
