Zou Shiming – Though the main event of the evening sees the return of Manny Pacquiao as he seeks another world title at the expense of WBO champion Jessie Vargas, on a worldwide basis, the most anticipated title match of the evening may come in the flyweight division.
This is because China’s Zou Shiming faces Prasitsak Phaprom of Thailand for the vacant belt at 112 pounds. Zou is 8-1 as a professional, but as a two-time Olympic gold medalist he is the most popular and recognized boxer in China. The 35 year old star has put pressure on himself to bring a world title home to the world’s most populous nation. The lone loss of his career came in a fast tracked world title fight in just his seventh bout as a pro. A second loss on Saturday would lessen the chances that the decorated amateur Olympian will ever bring professional world title glory home to China.
Credit to Zou Shiming for flashing some English during his brief speech. Do not be fooled by his calm demeanor at the podium this man fights with a lot of pressure.
The press conference went down at the Wynn Resorts Hotel in Las Vegas on November 3rd. Footage captured by TBC’s Marcelino Castillo.
