Sergey Kovalev Victorious Over Mikhalkin At The Garden – Saturday March 3rd, The Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden, saw the return of Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KOs) facing fellow Russian Igor Mikhalkin (21-2-0, 9 KOs) for the WBO world light heavyweight championship.
Mikhalkin never represented a real challenge to Kovalev; he was never able to remotely hurt “The Krusher.” By the end of the sixth, Mikhalkin’s face was a mess, his right cheek cut and swelling and his eye closing. Before Sergey could finish him off, referee Steve Willis stopped the match after Igor’s face was examined by the ringside physician.
In the co-main event, WBA world light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (13-0-0, 10 KOs) of Russia successfully defended his title against Cuba’s Sullivan Barrera (21-2-0, 14 KOs) by TKO at round twelve.
