Russell Jr Shines Atop a Chaotic Night in Maryland – WBC world featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr made a successful return to the ring as he took out a game Oscar Escandon in the seventh round of their main event title fight on Showtime Boxing. Escandon showed his grit in the early going, getting into heated exhanges with Russell Jr. Escandon went to the canvas in round three as the technically sound champion broke through and from there it was only a matter of time. Escandon went out on his shield in a game performance as well.
The co-feature for the interim IBF world title at super middleweight saw Andre Dirrell facing off against Jose Uzcategui. Dirrell was making his third attempt at a world title and though he is going home with the belt, he stated afterwards that he did not want it to happen the way it did. Uzcategui was a rough customer who dropped Dirrell early in the fight and was warned on several occasions by the referee. The two were exchanging along the ropes as round eight came to a close and after the bell rang Uzcategui sent a punch out that floored Dirrell. Dirrell could not continue and the referee assertively disqualified Uzcategui with the Venezuelan up on the cards. Afterwards order had to be restored in the ring as a member Dirrell’s camp attacked Uzcategui in the corner in a sequence clearly seen on the Showtime broadcast. Authorities were said to be looking to charge Dirrell’s team members afterwards, though Dirrell himself recovered enough to call for calm.
The broadcast got started with 140-pounders Rances Barthelemy and Kiryl Relikh and the two engaged in a hard fought bout that saw both men absorb a knock down only to continue on to the end. Barthelemy a former two weigh tclass world champion, was adjusting to a new weight class against the veteran Relikh, who was determined to avoid a second career loss. In the end the judges had a wide unanimous decision that saw legendary Showtime broadcaster Al Bernstein openly question the judges’ qualifications.
