Parker Outpoints Ruiz Jr in Auckland – The WBO world heavyweight title is staying in New Zealand with Joseph Parker as the 24 year old won a hard fought majority decision over Andy Ruiz Jr to take home the belt.
Though some expected fireworks heading into the fight, what evolved was more of a methodical fight between two evenly matched men. Ruiz Jr, the shorter of the two men, appeared to press the action and he had his best moments in the heat of exchanges with Parker, but in general those moments were few and far between for Ruiz Jr. Parker, the rangier and fitter athlete used a lot of movement to stay off the ropes and he won several rounds with a jab that kept Ruiz on the verge of throwing punches. In the end the judges came back with scores of 115-113 and 115-113 for Parker, while the third judge called the fight a draw.
Joseph Parker is now a perfect 22-0 as a professional and he is the new holder of the WBO world heavyweight championship.
