Paul Malignaggi was born on November 23, 1980. He is the current WBA Welterweight title holder. The man they refer to as “The Magic Man” and “Paulie” will be defending his title on June 22nd against Adrien Broner. Let's take a closer look at the career of Paulie.
Malignaggi began his pro career in 2001 and he ran off 18 straight wins before he got a title shot against Sandro Casamonica. Paulie won that fight to take the WBC International Light Welterweight title. Almost two years later it was Malignaggi defeating Donald Camarena for the WBC Continental America's Light Welterweight title.
Malignaggi took his 21-0 record into a fight against Miguel Cotto for the WBO Light Welterweight title in 2006 but Paulie lost in a 12-round unanimous decision. Paulie bounced back to beat Edner Cherry and then in 2007 he defeated Lovemore N'dou by unanimous decision to win the IBF Light Welterweight title.
Paulie defended his title against Herman Ngoudjo and won by unanimous decision. Paulie then fought N'dou for the second time and beat him by split decision to hold on to his IBF title. Paulie suffered a fractured right hand in that fight and it was not until late in 2008 that he fought again, losing to Ricky Hatton.
Malignaggi bounced back to beat Christopher Fernandez but then he lost to Juan Diaz in 2009. The two had a rematch later that year and in that fight it was Paulie winning by unanimous decision.
In 2010 it was Malignaggi taking on Amir Khan for the WBA Light Welterweight title but it was a no contest as Khan dominated and won by TKO in the 11 round.
Malignaggi won his next three fights and then fought Viacheslav Senchenko for the WBA Welterweight title. Malignaggi won by ninth round TKO. Paulie then defeated Pablo Cesar Cano by unanimous decision late in 2012.
Malignaggi will defend his WBA title against Adrien Broner on Saturday, June 22nd.
