Promoter Bob Arum and Top Rank are at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas this coming Saturday January 16th with a seven fight boxing card that sees the features air on UniMas in the United States.
The main event sees the return of Middleweight prospect Matt Korobov, as he takes on veteran Josue Ovando. The match is scheduled for eight rounds, as Korobov returns to shake off ring rust.
When we last saw Korobov fight, it was in December of 2014 as he fought with Andy Lee for the WBO World Middleweight title that had been left vacant by Peter Quillin. At the time, Korobov was considered a top prospect in the middleweight division, and at an undefeated (24-0) he entered the bout with the veteran British fighter Lee as a big favorite. Korobov was already comfortably ahead in the fight heading into round six, winning every round on the cards of two of the judges when disaster struck.
Korobov was working inside when Lee landed a right hand that sent Korobov staggering back on wobbly legs. Lee pounced, and it was clear Korobov was hurt as all he could do was cover up. Referee Kenny Bayless stepped in at the 1:10 mark, stopping the fight without Korobov ever having hit the canvas. For Korobov, it was a shocking and disappointing ending, and he has not fought since.
The card also features 26 year old undefeated Heavyweight prospect Andy Ruiz Jr, who is (26-0). Ruiz faces veteran Danny Batchelder in a fight that sees Ruiz a huge favorite. Ruiz had back to back fights cancelled in December, and the big fella is looking to stay active. Arum has stated that a win would leave Ruiz the frontrunner to face Ike Ibeabuchi, the 43 year old veteran who is returning to the ring after 17 years. That fight could be on April 9th's Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley pay-per-view telecast.
Top Rank's January 16th card in Dallas, Texas is set to feature prospects Matt Korobov and Andy Ruiz Jr in showcase fights, as both men look to put an unremarkable 2015 behind them.
