March 25th 1978 Looking Back At Earnie Shavers vs Larry Holmes – It was 48 years ago today on March 25th 1978 that Larry Holmes (68-6-0, 44 KOs) fought Earnie Shavers (74-14-1, 68 KOs) for the fist time. For Holmes it was a coming out party. After he met Shavers he went on to own the world heavyweight championship and become an all time great in the “big guys” division.
Larry had been a pro for five years at that time and had fought on television a few times. Don King was pretty frustrated with Holmes because he wasn’t catching on. Holmes (26-0) took on Shavers six months after Earnie fought Muhammad Ali for the title.
The match was made, a 12-rounder at Caesars Palace, nationally telecast over ABC. It was billed as an elimination bout for heavyweight title contenders—Shavers No. 3 and Holmes No. 4—with the winner meeting Ken Norton, the newly ordained WBC champion.
Here our boxing analyst Frank Lotierzo gives his take on this historical match-up.
