Lucas Martin Matthysse Set For Return – May 6th sees Las Vegas hosting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr at the T-Mobile Arena for another major HBO PPV on Cinco de Mayo Weekend. The support card is packed with talent as expected and it includes the return of rugged Argentinian contender Lucas Martin Matthysse as he prepares to return to the ring after a layoff of over 16 months.
Our Spanish language correspondent Diego Morilla at Canal De Boxeo caught up with Matthysse this past Tuesday, April 12th as Lucas was leaving for the United States to complete the last few weeks of training camp in California under the guidance of trainer Joel Diaz.
Lucas Martin Matthysse Set For May 6 Return
Matthysse, who is (37-4) overall, was last seen in October of 2015 when he went to war with Viktor Postol for the vacant WBC world title at 140 pounds where he came up just short, falling in the 10th round of a Fight of the Year candidate.
After that fight Matthysse reports spending almost 10 months off and away from the sport, just spending time with family back in Argentina and re-focusing.
On May 6th, Matthysse will be taking on Emmanuel Taylor in a bout that sees him testing the waters as a 147 pound welterweight for the first time.
Fans of Matthysse may notice his gaudy new neck tattoos that he describes as a skull with images from his neighborhood and the number “82” indicating the year of his birth.
Lucas Matthysse will be training at the Joel Diaz Training Camp into May as he prepares for Emmanuel Taylor.
