Latin Prospect Watch With Diego Morilla (Cuba) – In this third installment, we are once again joined by our Latin American correspondent Diego Morilla to look at the top three “prospects” from Cuba.
Even in the varied and wide world of boxing, talking about Cuba is a different story. Since 1959, Cuban authorities haven’t allowed their athletes to participate in professional boxing, though the country has gone on to dominate the amateur ranks. Recent years have seen several Cuban boxers defect, but the island still adheres to the “no pro” policy. There is hope that this may change, but for the time being there is no assurance that we will ever see these three boxers in the professional ranks.
Check out Morilla’s “scoop” on the following three up-and-coming fighters from Cuba to keep an eye on:
1.- Julio César La Cruz – His accolades include AIBA boxer of the year, a world championship and an Olympic gold medal.
2.- Robeysis Ramirez – Already a two time Olympic gold medalist at just 23 years old, he defeated Shakur Stevenson in Rio.
3.- Andy Cruz – World Champion who has taken the amateur scene by storm and is the new darling of Cuban boxing.
