Kovalev vs Ward MY FIGHT – HBO’s next pay-per-view event is less than two weeks away, as November 19th sees the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada host Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev.
The highly anticipated match-up has been more than one year in the making and with the fight right around the corner, the sports books have this a near pick ’em fight. Kovalev (30-0-1) will be defending his WBA, WBO and IBF World titles at 175 pounds against the undefeated Ward (30-0) who dominated the super middleweight division before moving up in weight for his last two contests.
The respected Transnational Boxing Rankings Board lists Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward as the number one and number two ranked light heavyweights in the world today. The TBRB also lists Kovalev as the #2 pound for pound fighter in the world today behind Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez. Ward does not make the list at this time because of inactivity over recent years but with a win over Kovalev he will almost assuredly enter the top 5.
HBO has invested a great deal in this fight, and that included taking the risk of having both fighters participate in tune-up bouts. The number of pay-per-view buys will be critical, as neither man has established himself as a primetime draw as of yet.
The live event is a co-promotion between Kathy Duva’s Main Events and David Itskowitch’s Roc Nation Sports. The planned live event features ten fights in all with three regional title bouts of 10 rounds making up the main support.
HBO Sports also produced a half hour documentary called “MY FIGHT” that gives the viewer some insight as to how big the fight is to both men. This show should be considered a “must watch” as we approach fight time.
