Kovalev vs Ward 2 Set For June – The much talked about rematch between light heavyweight studs Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward has been announced for June 17th at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ward (31-0) will be defending the WBA, IBF and WBO world titles against the former champion Kovalev (30-1-1) over twelve rounds, fulfilling Kovalev’s request to invoke his re-match clause.
The pair first met in November of last year and that controversial fight ended with a unanimous decision in Ward’s favor as all three judges scored the fight 114-113.
Not a lot of details on the deal have been made public as negotiations went on quietly. Reports are that the first bout between the two men sold approximately 160,000 pay-per-views for what was a tension-filled fight that was fought tactically and did not feature many highlight reel moments. Presumably cable giant HBO has stepped in to make the fight happen as it is doubtful the fight could have been made while cutting both men’s pay, or even keeping it the same. Kudos to all parties involved for coming to an agreement.
