Kovalev Stopped in 8 as Ward Retains Titles – Saturday night saw Andre Ward step up and defend his WBA, WBO and IBF world titles as he delivered an eighth round stoppage victory over former champion Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev. The two met last November and Ward won that fight by the narrowest of margins and Saturday’s affair looked to be heading in the same direction. Ward, however, avoided the controversy of the first fight when he hurt Kovalev in the eighth round and he closed the deal with a flurry of body punches that sent referee Tony Weeks in for the save.
