Frank Lotierzo Talks Cotto vs Kirkland Cancellation – The news that Miguel Cotto’s return fight against James Kirkland had been cancelled broke earlier in the month. The bout, which was scheduled to air on HBO PPV on February 25th, is off because James Kirkland suffered a broken nose in training camp. With three weeks left before the scheduled date, a new opponent was unlikely to be found.
Cotto is going to be 37 years old on February 23rd. The former four weight class world champion was last seen fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a pay-per-view that drew more than 900,000 buys back at the end of 2015.
For his part, Kirkland also was last seen as the foil for “Canelo” and Alvarez stopped him with a cold blooded KO in the third round. Kirkland has been off since that May of 2015 performance and this latest setback puts his next date and opponent back in the air.
