First Look at the WBSS Cruiserweight Semifinals – The World Boxing Super Series returns with the semifinals of their Cruiserweight Tournament with dates in late January and early February.
Tournament favorite Oleksandr Usyk heads to Riga, Latvia to face undefeated Mairis Briedis in the first semi-final slated for January 27th. The following week in Adler, Russia, Murat Gassiev faces off against Yunier Dorticos.
Usyk advanced after beating veteran former champion Marco Huck, while Briedis won a unanimous decision over former heavyweight Mike Perez to get to the semifinal round. On the other side of the bracket, Gassiev dispatched Krzysztof Wlodarczyk with a 3rd round KO while Dorticos put away slugger Dmitry Kudryashov in round 2.
Both bouts are world title unification bouts. Usyk holds the WBC belt while Briedis is the keeper of the WBC’s 200-pound title. On the other side of the bracket Gassiev hold the IBF’s title and Dorticos brings the WBA’s belt. The tournament finals are expected in the April or May time frame and will bring us one champion with the four major world titles at 200 pounds if all plays out according to plan.
