Cotto vs Ali: Ali Upsets Cotto At MSG – Puerto Rico’s legendary Miguel Cotto entered the ring at 37 years old to defend his WBO world title against Brooklyn’s Sadam Ali last night at Madison Square Garden. Cotto had announced that he would retire after this fight, and the common thinking was that he would go out with a win.
Kudos to Ali, who did not come in a willing participant to the expected script. Ali moved up to 154 pounds to take the fight and he showed his hand speed throughout as well as considerable pop. He staggered Cotto on several occasions and the champion was noticeably weary entering the championship rounds. Ali’s confidence seemed to grow entering rounds ten, eleven and twelve and Cotto had little left in the way of firepower. After twelve rounds, Ali emerged the winner by unanimous decision.
Cotto goes off into retirement having won world titles in four different weight classes, and with a record of 41-6. As for Ali, he is now a player in a crowded weight class where the WBA belt is held by Erislandy Lara, the IBF belt is held by Jarrett Hurd and the WBC belt is owned by Jermell Charlo.
