Castellanos Takes Out Gamboa in Vegas – Friday night saw Oscar De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions kick off perhaps their biggest weekend of the year with a full night of fights at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The main event of the evening resulted in a major upset in the crowded lightweight division as former world champion Robinson Castellanos (24-12) defeated Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-1) in a fight many were calling a showcase for Gamboa. Gamboa, a former Cuban amateur standout and former Olympic Gold Medalist suffered just the second defeat of his career but the last few years have been plagued by out of the ring problems and inactivity and last night’s loss was a real setback for Gamboa, who is now 35 years old and seemingly moving away from title contention in a talent-laden 135 pound weight class.
