Canelo vs Chavez Jr Mexico Presser – Monday afternoon, February 20th sees Mexico City hosting a press conference to formally kick off the festivities around the May 6th Saul “Canelo” Alvarez versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr bout set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and HBO pay-per-view.
Alvarez (48-1-1) meets Chavez Jr (50-2-1) at a catch weight of 164.5 pounds. There are no titles on the line but the match-up pits two of the most established names in boxing fighting for Mexican pride. Alvarez is coming off a 2016 that saw him go 2-0, fighting two British fighters in Amir Khan and Liam Smith, while Chavez Jr returned to the ring in December of 2016 after a near 18-month layoff.
The fight is scheduled for the “Cinco de Mayo” weekend and is expected to draw a lot of attention south of the border. Both men have crossed over to international stardom and are among the biggest names in boxing over the last decade, but the match-up has been criticized in some circles and it is still an open question as to whether the fight will draw in the United States.
The press tour continues on Feb 21st in New York and then closes out with February 23rd in Houston and February 24th in Los Angeles as GBP begins the publicity for the fight in a big way.
