Briedis vs Perez Saturday as WBSS Rolls On – The World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament continues Saturday in Latvia as Mairis Briedis faces Mike Perez.
Briedis won the vacant WBC world cruiserweight title this past April when he won a UD victory over Marco Huck and this fight against Perez marks his first world title defense. It is also his first test in the WBSS cruiserweight tournament and in Perez he is fighting a hard hitting Cuban defector, currently residing in Ireland, who is dropping down to the 200-pound weight class from the heavyweight division.
The Briedis vs Perez match-up is the third tournament quarterfinal. Earlier in September, #1 seed Oleksandr Usyk advanced when he stopped veteran Marco Huck in the 10th round and Cuba’s Yunier Dorticos made short work of hard hitting Russian Dmitry Kudrayashov with a second round KO. The last of the quarterfinal match-ups is scheduled for October 21st in New Jersey when Murat Gassiev (24-0) faces Krzysztof Wlodarcyzyk (53-3-1).
