Alvarez Stops Bute To Grab WBC #1 Contender Spot – Veteran former 168-pound world champion Lucian Bute was hoping to put the light heavyweight division on notice last night with a win over well regarded Eleider Alvarez, but it was not to be. Colombia’s Alvarez came in ranked #7 at 175 pounds (TBRB.org) but he too was in need of a statement victory and in the end it was Alvarez that prevailed by scoring a fifth round TKO stoppage to remain undefeated and move to 22-0.
The win gives Alvarez the “Title Eliminator” with the WBC, leaving him the number one contender to Adonis Stevenson and his WBC world title. Most of the other major titles in the weight class are held by Andre Ward, though when the mercurial star will fight again remains to be seen. Also crowding the top of the divisional rankings at light heavyweight is former titleholder Sergey Kovalev, England’s Nathan Cleverly and American upstart Joe Smith Jr. There is also former 168-pound WBC champion Badou Jack who is moving up in weight class.
