Alexander Povetkin Cruises Over Hammer in Russia – Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin moved his record to 33-1 with a clear-cut unanimous decision over Christian Hammer Friday night in Ekaterinburg.
Hammer was not able to get off anything in the way of offense as Povetkin chased him throughout the twelve rounds. Hammer had put together a solid five fight winning streak heading into this bout but in this one he was little more than the “opposition.”
The win nets Povetkin regional belts with the WBA and the WBO. This will put him in the conversation for title shots in 2018 against WBA kingpin Anthony Joshua and WBO champion Joseph Parker. A thing of the past is Povetkin’s relationship with the WBC, whose beltholder is Deontay Wilder. Povetkin had a world title shot with Wilder and a WBC interim title fight against Bermane Stiverne come apart at the last minute due to failed PED tests by Povetkin.
Povetkin, a former Olympic gold medalist, has been looking for a second shot at a world title after coming up short in his first attempt against Wladimir Klitshko back in October of 2013. At 38 years old now, Povetkin’s window of opportunity is getting smaller. Look for Povetkin to call for a title shot as early as possible in 2018.
