Peterson vs Matthysse
Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse will meet on May 18th in the main event of a boxing card to be held at Boardwalk Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey and be televised by Showtime. Let's look at this fight between two hard hitters.
Even though Peterson and Matthysse are considered two of the top fighters in the 140-147 lb weight range this will not be a title fight on Saturday, May 18th. Because of the politics in boxing it will be a non-title fight with the winner likely getting a shot against the winner of Danny Garcia – Zab Judah down the road.
Lamont Peterson comes into this bout with a record of 31-1-1 with 16 knockouts while Lucas Matthysse is 33-2 with 31 knockouts. The only two losses for Matthysse came in controversial decisions to Alexander and Judah. Matthysse comes into this fight having won his last five bouts, all by knockout.
This fight may not end up going the distance based on the style of the two fighters. Peterson has 16 knockouts in his career while Matthysse has 31 knockouts. Matthysse normally goes right after his opponents and so far in his career, Peterson has not backed down from anyone. Matthysse is getting a lot of respect as he is better than a 2-1 favorite in boxing odds.
The longer this fight goes the better the chances of Peterson will be. Peterson continues to get better as fights go along while Matthysse could get frustrated if he doesn't get the early knockout. The key in this fight will be for Peterson to avoid getting into a slugfest with Matthysse. So far in his career, Peterson has gotten away with trading shots with opponents but he will not get away with it against the powerful Matthysse. If Peterson puts his ego aside and fights a smart fight and tries to outbox Matthysee then he could get the win. If he decides to slug it out, he will probably end up on the canvas.
Both of these fighters would love to win this one since a big payday against the winner of Garcia and Judah is likely in the future for later this year but the loser is not going away.
